A look at Mid-Penn playoff games for Monday, October 21
Mid-Penn teams get rolling in 3A girls and boys soccer.
The District III playoffs are here in Central Pennsylvania sports and 15 teams are in action on Monday evening in boys and girls soccer at the 3A level.
3A BOYS SOCCER
#1 Conrad Weiser vs #16 West Perry (@ Conrad Weiser, 7 PM)
Conrad Weiser entered last year's bracket as the third seed, beating Muhlenberg, ELCO and Lampeter-Strasburg before losing closely to Hershey in the District III 3A championship game. In the state tournament, Conrad Weiser lost in the PIAA quarterfinals. The Scouts are undefeated coming into their meeting with 10-7-1 West Perry.
#8 Fleetwood vs #9 Hershey (@ Fleetwood, 7 PM)
Hershey won the state title two years ago and fell short last season, but not before winning the District III 3A bracket, 4-3 in penalty kicks, which advanced their record to 20-0 at the time. Fleetwood also found success in district soccer, winning the 2A championship 5-1 over Camp Hill, the eventual 2A state champions.
#4 Shippensburg vs #13 York Suburban (@ Shippensburg University, 7 PM)
The 16-2 Greyhounds will have a special venue of the Robb Complex, a facility of Shippensburg University for their meeting with York Suburban on Monday night. York Suburban snuck in as a 13 seed sporting a 9-6-3 record.
#2 Gettysburg vs #15 McDevitt (@ Gettysburg, 7 PM)
Gettysburg is the top-ranked Mid-Penn team in the 3A bracket, coming off three straight wins to conclude the regular season, coming against Boiling Springs, Greencastle-Antrim and Mifflin County. Their only loss on the season came against Shippensburg on October 1. A fresh addition to the Mid-Penn Keystone, McDevitt skated just above .500 in the regular season and hold the #15 seed.
#3 Northern vs #14 East Penn (@ Northern, 7 PM)
Northern, like its southern neighbor Gettysburg, has only dropped one game so far this season. Their only loss this season; Gettyburg’s round one opponent McDevitt. Since then, the Polar Bears beat Lower Dauphin, Greencastle-Antrim and Boiling Springs. East Penn lost in last year’s first round against a visiting #9 seed Lower Dauphin, and are led by goal scoring machine Steel Bayer.'
#6 Lampeter-Strasburg vs #11 Boiling Springs (@ Lampeter-Strasburg, 7 PM)
Boiling Springs has run into some unexpected challengers this season in Gettysburg, Camp Hill, Lancaster Catholic, Gettysburg, Shippensburg and Northern. Those six, all playoff teams, handed them their six losses this season. The foe, six seeded Lampeter Strasburg has dropped just one game to Penn Manor, an early season loss on August 30.
3A GIRLS SOCCER
#1 Lower Dauphin vs #16 West Perry (@ Lower Dauphin, 7 PM)
The Falcons once again rule the 3A jungle after winning the District tournament two seasons ago. Last year, the 9-8-1 LD team was seeded 11th, but upset #6 Susquehannock before a quarterfinal knockout from Cocalico. Northern’s losses came back to back on September 17 and 19, a pair of 5-0 setbacks to Northern and Central Dauphin. Since then, the Falcons have won eight in a row to conclude the regular season and face bottom seed West Perry, who squeaked in at an 11-7 record.
#8 Greencastle-Antrim vs #9 East Penn (@ Greencastle, 7 PM)
It’s the second of two all Mid-Penn matchups, a corresponding game with LD and WP, guaranteeing a Mid-Penn affair in the quarterfinal matchup as well. The Panthers turned in 14 wins to just three losses this season, but still hold just the nine seed, forcing a battle and a visit to Greencastle. Their losses came against Trinity (2-1 in 2OT), 4-1 in their second Trinity meeting, and 3-1 to Chambersburg. On the Greencastle side, they’ve lost five times this season, falling to Central York, Chambersburg, Boiling Springs (twice), and Northern.
#5 York Suburban vs #12 Palmyra (@ York Suburban, 7 PM)
In a battle of black and orange, the Cougars pay a visit down to York after a 9-8-1 campaign this season. Palmyra finished strong in October, going 3-0-1 in the month thus far, with wins over Red land, CD East, Middletown and tie against #14 seed Hershey.
#2 Susquehannock vs #15 Gettysburg (@ Susquehannock, 5:30 PM)
Gettysburg is sitting at 7-7-2, finishing the season with a 1-2-1 record, beating Mifflin County, losing to Boiling Springs and Greencastle, while tying Carlisle. Gettysburg did not qualify for last year’s tournament.
#3 Cocalico vs #14 Hershey (@ Cocalico, 5 PM)
Despite it’s lopsidedness in seeding, this is a big-time rematch of last year’s District III semifinal, a 2-0 score in favor of Cocalico, who ultimately lost to Northern in a 3-1 District final. Hershey is 7-8-3 on the season, finishing with West Shore wins over Cedar Cliff and Red Land.
